Banpu Public Company Limited, in collaboration with the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University, continues its commitment to empowering the next generation by applying environmental science to sustainable environmental care and problem-solving. This is achieved through the 20th Power Green Camp, themed “The Decarb Mission,” inspiring youth to drive decarbonization in their everyday life and communities. The camp takes place from 26 April to 4 May 2025.
This year’s Power Green Camp isn’t just packed with intensive theoretical and practical learning activities. It also features a special celebration of the camp’s two-decade legacy as the longest-running environmental science camp in Thailand: the “Decarb Festival.” This activity provides a platform for Power Green Camp alumni from all 20 years to showcase their environmental expertise through science projects, workshops, talks, and a range of creative and engaging activities. The two-day festival will be held on 2 – 3 May 2025 at the CU Centenary Park.
Mr. Rattapon Sukhunthee, Head of Corporate Communications at Banpu Public Company Limited, said, “For over two decades, Banpu and the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies at Mahidol University have not only refined the camp’s learning activities but also committed to enhancing potential and cultivated a network of young leaders who are bold in their thinking, actions, and commitment to environmental change. These young people are not just ‘learners’ but ‘change-makers.’ We believe Power Green Camp alumni will be key contributors to driving society towards sustainability.”
“Over the past 20 years, the Power Green Camp has nurtured over 1,185 young people, raising awareness of environmental issues and empowering them to become key players in systematic environmental care and problem-solving. This year, the camp received over 515 applications from high school students across 304 schools, a clear indication that Thai youth are ‘waking up’ and ready to play a role in shaping the future of our planet,” Rattapon added.
Associate Professor Dr. Noppol Arunrat, Deputy Dean for Research and Academic Services at the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, and Chairperson of the 20th Power Green Camp, said, “Education shouldn’t be confined to the classroom. The Power Green Camp prioritizes designing a ‘classroom of the future’ that goes beyond theory to address real-world problems, understand the role of nature, and use science as a tool for positive change. We want young people to be active participants in environmental stewardship and problem-solving. By equipping them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experiences, they will become essential contributors to the well-being of our country and the world.”
This year’s field activities will take place in Nakhon Ratchasima province, where participants will learn about the importance of forests as carbon sinks in various contexts, including Khao Yai National Park, community forests, agricultural areas, and ecotourism sites. The 50 participants will be tasked with establishing survey plots to assess carbon sequestration in forest areas, studying plant community structures, and applying innovative technologies, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), to analyze, manage, and address environmental issues. UAVs play a crucial role in various areas, including forest and wildlife monitoring and protection, pollution detection, climate change tracking, and forest restoration. Participants will also learn about community-based tourism management at “Baan Tha Maprang – Baan Khlong Phen,” which utilizes the “Local Low Carbon” model, and participate in low-carbon organic farming practices, demonstrating that global change can start in small communities.
“Banpu remains committed to its mission of ‘Embracing Potential, Energizing People’ by empowering the ‘next generation’ to create ‘the power to act.’ We firmly believe that graduates of the ‘Power Green Camp,’ this environmental science classroom, will become essential contributors to the restoration of our planet. They will leverage their scientific and technological knowledge, as well as their experiences, to create positive change and build a sustainable future for generations to come,” Rattapon concluded.
